Toothbuds Dentistry Offers Calming Laughing Gas (Nitrous Oxide) To Calm Our Nervous Patients!

What Is Laughing Gas?

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas or happy gas, is a colourless, non-flammable gas, with a sweetish odor. Dr. Kaur utilizes nitrous oxide as a sedative, relieving anxiety and allowing our patients to relax before any dental treatment begins. Despite the name, laughing gas isn’t guaranteed to make you laugh, however, it might make you giggle!

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide

There are several reasons Dr. Kaur utilizes nitrous oxide for some dental procedures. Nitrous helps relieve patients anxiety and is easy to administer as no needles are required. You’re simply given a mask to cover your nose (or nose and mouth) and you breathe. Nitrous begins working in 3-5 minutes and is gone 5-10 minutes after Dr. Kaur turns off the gas flow. Nitrous is very safe for patients as the delivery system has at least 12 audio and visual safety features to prevent any problems while administering the gas.

What Does Laughing Gas Do?

Laughing gas helps you remain calm while Dr. Kaur or our hygienist treats you. The gas is not meant to put you fully asleep. Nitrous raises the threshold at which you feel discomfort, and when anesthetic is utilized in conjunction with Nitrous, you will find that your dental experience is so much more comfortable!

Before your procedure, Dr. Kaur will ask for your consent to use nitrous oxide. After that, a plastic mask will be placed over your nose or mouth and nose. The laughing gas flows through the mask, and you breathe it in. Simple!

Nitrous oxide doesn’t put you fully to sleep, you’ll still hear what’s going on around you. You should be able to respond to questions that any one of the Toothbuds team asks you and you will be able to follow their instructions.

Once your procedure is over, Dr. Kaur will remove the mask that’s providing the nitrous oxide. The effects of laughing gas typically wear off within a few minutes. Children might be given 100% oxygen after the nitrous oxide mask is removed. The oxygen helps them to fully recover within minutes.

Nitrous Oxide Side Effects

There are no long-term side effects when nitrous oxide is used. But if you need many procedures that require laughing gas, Dr. Kaur will discuss the exact details with you.

Who Shouldn’t Get Nitrous Oxide?

Very ill patients, patients with heart conditions. women in their first trimester, patients having surgeries in closed-air spaces, patients with serious psychiatric disorders and children under three years old.

Never use nitrous oxide without the careful watch of your health care providers, or Dr. Kaur. Misuse of nitrous oxide has negative side effects, such as memory loss, incontinence, depression, a weak immune system, ringing in your ears, possible birth defects if used during pregnancy, and more. You shouldn’t try to drive or operate machinery while under the effects of laughing gas, so we ask that you make prior arrangements for transportation home after your dental appointment.

Important Information On Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is an anesthetic that Dr. Kaur utilizes to help you remain calm before a procedure. It’s not meant to put you fully asleep, but to have you relax. It can make you feel happy, light-headed and euphoric. But the effects only last a few minutes after the gas flow is turned off, so you don’t have lasting side effects when it’s used.

Nitrous oxide, according to the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, finds it safe and effective for children, as does a 2008 study published in Pediatrics, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). However, it is best to speak with Dr. Kaur so that you may understand every aspect of nitrous oxide prior to it being utilized for your child.

Can you eat before laughing gas?

You can, but since nitrous oxide has a possible side effect of nausea, it’s best not to eat too much. Eat a light meal an hour or two before your procedure.
