What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third molars located at the very back of your mouth; two at the top and two at the bottom. They’re our last set of teeth to erupt, typically between the ages of 17 and 25. Why General Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

Having teeth removed is necessary for a few different reasons, especially if it's causing issues and negatively affecting your oral health. Here are some common reasons why Dr. Kaur will suggest patients have a tooth, or multiple teeth removed:

  • Infection

    If you're experiencing pain, notice pus pockets, have inflamed/tender gums, or physically notice a dark spot on your tooth, it may be time to have the tooth removed. However, it may also be that your tooth can be saved with a root canal and then a crown to protect it. Dr. Kaur will determine the best course of action once your situation is thoroughly diagnosed.

    If your tooth has been hit and cracked, or it's cracked due to infection, you should have Dr. Kaur examine it right away. There is always a possibility that your tooth can be saved! If left untreated, bacteria can get into the crack of your tooth and make it worse. Infection can also spread to surrounding teeth or even your bloodstream fairly quickly.

  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth

    An impacted wisdom tooth means that your tooth is under the gums or has only partially been able to breakthrough. This can be very uncomfortable, lead to swelling, cavities, and other complications. It is a very good idea to allow Dr. Kaur to examine your wisdom teeth so that she may be able to analyze your situation and communicate your options.

  • Overcrowding

    Sometimes our jaws are just too small to accommodate all of our teeth, therefore, overcrowding becomes an issue. Overcrowded teeth can cause problems with your bite, how you chew your food, cavities, headaches, swollen gums, and other possible complications. Sometimes it's also necessary to remove your wisdom teeth before orthodontic treatment ensues so teeth can properly be properly guided into their correct and most functional position.
